Toraja ethnic group lives on the mountains in South Sulawesi. Their origins are still a mistery: it seems that they reached Indonesia from the Pacific Ocean, sailing on boats whose shape remains in the typical wooden houses, all looking East (toward the roots).
Converted to Cristianity, Toraja people still cultivate animistic traditions, especially in the death people care. The picturesque graveyards, the wooden statues reproducing the death's face (tau-tau), the luxurious funerals, true happenings to which the traveller are invited, having their peak in the ritual killing of the buffaloes, are only the more spectacular aspects.
A visit to Tana Toraja is also the contact with a different culture, with a flourishing and immaginative craftmanship (wood carving, clothes).
Toraja land tour needs a minimum of 4 days and an air transfer to Makassar (Ujung Padang). For more info ask us or to your
